Wesley Gomer

Wes Gomer passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2023, in Abilene, Texas.

Wes was born in Burleson, TX to Stanley and Wanda Gomer on December 20, 1955.  He attended public schools in Burleson and went on to graduate from Texas Wesleyan University, Texas Christian University, and received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Texas Tech in 2004.

Wes married Charles Shelton in 2016 at the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest in Abilene. He was a gifted church musician and worked for a number of churches during his life.  Wes grew up at Trinity Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Burleson where he served as organist while he was in high school.

In graduate school at TCU, he served as organist at First Presbyterian Church in Arlington.  He was organist - choirmaster for a number of years at Trinity Episcopal Church in Longview.

While pursing his doctorate at Texas Tech, he was organist at First Christian Church in Lubbock.  After receiving his DMA, he moved to Abilene and served as organist at The Episcopal Church of Heavenly Rest, eventually becoming organist - choirmaster.  He was also assistant professor of music at McMurry University in Abilene teaching organ, piano, sacred music, and music history.  He served as interim director of the McMurry Chanters for two years.

Wes’s memorial service will be 2:00 pm Saturday, October 14, 2023, at the Episcopal Church of Heavenly Rest at 602 Meander St, Abilene, TX 79602 with a reception to follow.
