Wenzel James “Jim” Swaim Jr., 78, of Abilene, passed away on September 11, 2026.

Jim was born on October 18, 1947, in Abilene, Texas, to Jimmy and Jackie Swaim. He was born and raised in Abilene and graduated from Cooper High School in 1966. He later earned his master’s degree from St. Edward’s University.

Jim proudly served his country in the United States Army from October 1967 until August 1991, retiring with the rank of major. He also dedicated many years to serving Texas Parks and Wildlife, where he was a regional director from June 1980 until August 2003.

On January 23, 1981, Jim married the love of his life, Jeanette Brown. Together, they built a life centered on family, faith, service, and travel. Jim was a member of Aldersgate Methodist Church, and he and Jeanette participated in numerous mission trips throughout the years.

Jim was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family was one of his greatest joys. He rarely missed an opportunity to watch his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play baseball and volleyball, and softball, and he happily traveled to cheer them on at games near and far.

Jim and Jeanette also shared a special love for Mazatlán, Mexico, where they owned a beachfront condo. Jim loved the beauty of the beach, the wonderful people they came to know, and, of course, the food. Mazatlán became a treasured home away from home, filled with special memories and lasting friendships.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmy and Jackie Swaim; his beloved wife, Jeanette Swaim; his brother, Michael Swaim; and his nephew, Adam Swaim.

He is survived by his brother, David Swaim and Kathy; his daughters, Kimberly Stinnett and Randy Legate, and Jamie Golden; his grandchildren, Sierra Sudberry, Logan Stinnett, and Jaleigh Sudberry; his great-grandchildren, Parker and Walker Medford; as well as several nieces, aunts, cousins, extended family members, and many dear friends.

Visitation will be held Sunday, September 20, 2026, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at The Hamil Family Funeral Home.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held Monday, September 21, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, with Ken Lyle officiating. Graveside services will follow at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene.

Pallbearers will be Butch Strickland, Jackie Casey, Peter Casey, Henry Rodriguez, Bob Carter, Jerry Warden, and Wes Medford.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Casey and Robert Swaim.

Jim leaves behind a legacy of love for his family, service to his country and community, devotion to his faith, and a lifetime of cherished memories. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
