Vern Sutterfield, Sr.

Vern Sutterfield, Sr., 94, of Tye, passed away Friday, October 21, 2022, at his home. He was born December 25, 1927, to John and Nora Sutterfield in Arkansas.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, October 27, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Funeral services will be at 9:30 am on Friday, October 28, at Beltway Park South, in the chapel, with Randy Turner officiating. Burial will follow at 11:00 am at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene.

Vern served in the United States Army after leaving school to join. Under Governor Rick Perry, he was given an honorary high school diploma from Ira High School. During his younger years, he raced cars and coached Golden Glove Boxing. He married Becky Elam Stoneham on May 25, 1979. When he wasn’t racing cars, he was working on them. Vern was known as someone who could fix anything, and he even made an occupation out of this skill, working for Sears, Roebuck, and Co. as an appliance repairman. Vern was a strong man of faith, having read the bible front to back multiple times. He loved sports, especially football, and especially Texas high school football. He was a Master Mason at Abilene Lodge #559. Vern was a calf roper in the senior rodeo until he was 92.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, first wife Faye Underwood Sutterfield, son Vern Sutterfield, Jr., and daughter Linda Faye Armstrong.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Becky Sutterfield; son, Gary Sutterfield and wife Tammy of Merkel; daughter, Sharon Frodge and husband Richard of Tye; step-son, Trey Stoneham and wife Karen of Lampasas; step-son, Tommy Stoneham and wife Judy of Abilene; 15 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.
