Theresa Major Steele

1934 — June 9, 2021

Theresa M. Steele passed away at her home and went to be with her Lord on June 9, 2021. She was born June 27, 1934 in Abilene, Texas to Orion and Theresa Major. She was married to Harral L. Steele on March 17, 1951. They were married for 41 years prior to his passing in 1991. They lived mostly in Abilene except for times when his job with Merchants Motor Lines required them to move elsewhere in the West Texas area. Theresa graduated from Abilene High School in 1952. She worked many years as a church secretary at several churches. From 1978 to 1993 she worked dispensing safety glasses at Texas Instruments. Most of her career was spent working for doctors in Abilene as a medical assistant, office manager and filing insurance claims, as well as training new employees. Those she worked for included Dr. Virginia Boyd Connally, Dr. Clyde Morgan and Dr. Bradley Kendrick. She received her certification as a Medical Assistant in 1982 and recertified in 1993. The following are the organizations and positions she held: American Organizations of Medical Assistants (Co-President, Secretary, Chaplain, and Scholarship Committee and also aided in beginning classes for certified medical assistant students), Taylor-Jones Medical Society (President, Vice President, Secretary, Program Chair and Chaplain), Womens Society of Christian Service (President, Program Director, Vice President, Treasurer and received the Life Time Member Award), WMU (Program Chair). She was a member of College View Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher. She enjoyed working with many of the refugees that attended her church. Previously, for 15 years she had a Nursing Home Ministry to teach Sunday School to residents. Also, she served doing letter writing in a prison ministry program. Theresa was an avid lover and watcher of baseball, in particular the Texas Rangers. Her love of baseball originates with her father who, at one time, played in the minor leagues for the New York Yankees. She shared this love of baseball with her sons and grandsons. All are still avid baseball fans from her example. Theresa was preceded in death by her parents, Orion and Theresa Major, one brother Charles Major, brothers-in-law, T.D. Higgs, Sam Steele and her husband, Harral. She is survived by her sons David Steele of Stephenville, Don Steele and wife Melinda of Lubbock and Darral Steele of Abilene; grandchildren Davey Steele and wife Cresenda of Stephenville, Shauna Campbell of Stephenville, James Steele and wife Mindy of Abernathy, Jeff Steele and wife Melody of Lubbock; great grandchildren Auburn and Berkeley Steele of Stephenville and Jade and Ryan Campbell of Stephenville; one brother James Major and wife Pat of Arlington; sister-in-law (who was more like a sister to her) Margaret (Steele) Higgs of Whitehouse, niece Nancy Wheeler and husband Lou of Whitehouse; sister-in-law Sidney Steele of Beaumont and several other nieces and nephews; special friends Robert and Rae Mowry of Denton and best friend Juanita Large of Galveston. Visitation will be held Friday, June 18 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at College View Baptist Church in Abilene. A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, June 19 at 11:00 am at College View Baptist Church at 2042 Anderson St. (just off Old Anson Road), Abilene, Texas officiated by Pastor Randy Roy. A private burial for the family will be held at a later date. A special thank you to Hendrick Hospice Care and Hamil Family Funeral Home.
