Steve Mathis, beloved father, friend, peacefully departed this world on July 2, 2026, at the age of 66. Born on November 9, 1959, in Abilene, Texas, Steve was the cherished son of Wendell and Shirley Mathis, who both predeceased him.

Steve's early years were spent in Abilene, where he cultivated lifelong friendships and began to develop the sparkling personality for which he would be fondly remembered. A proud graduate of Abilene High School in 1979, Steve was known among his peers for his quick wit and infectious smile, always ready with a joke to lighten the mood and brighten the day of those around him.

He pursued higher education at the University of Texas at Arlington, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in 1990. It was during these formative years that Steve further honed his ability to connect with people from all walks of life, a skill that would serve him well throughout his life.

Steve was a man who never met a stranger. He had an unmatched gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued, a legacy that will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.

Steve navigated life's ups and downs with grace and resilience, always emerging with a renewed sense of purpose and an unwavering commitment to those he loved. His son, Dylan Mathis, survives him. Steve is also survived by his brother, Craig Mathis and sister Kay Mathis. Several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 10, 2026, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd., Abilene. Family Visitation will be at 10:00am prior to the service.
