Sherry Lynn Hirsch was born on August 24th of 1949 to Orville and Delores Hicks. She grew up and attended schools on the Navajo Reservation in Window Rock Arizona where her dad was the Bureau of Indian Affairs Superintendent. She later graduated from Eagle Butte High School in South Dakota.

Sherry was intense and outgoing even as a young child as she continued to be until her passing. She loved the theater and music. She was a gymnast and loved dancing and playing the saxophone. She was a cheerleader in high school and went on to be a cheerleader in college. She went to Black Hills state and majored in Speech Pathology where she met her future husband Victor John Hirsch, Jr.

She married him May 31st, 1971, and she graduated with her masters in Vermillion SD, at University of South Dakota while Victor started his medical degree. They moved to Dallas, TX for him to pursue his clinical years of training and she worked at UT Dallas Callier Center for the deaf in Inwood. She taught at Southern Methodist University in the centers for communication disorders.

They had their first child Victor “John” Hirsch III in 1976 and after V.J finished his training they moved to Abilene, TX. Sherry quickly became involved in the community which started her lasting legacy that continues to this day.

She gave birth to Samantha in 1983. She was involved in the Junior league, The Women’s club, and multiple fundraisers from baseball and softball to PTA and church. She has fed many ball player from Cooper to Abilene High to Wylie High school. She and her husband are members of First Central Presbyterian where she brought her grandkids and worshiped. She was a professor at Hardin Simmons University in education and was of the aggressive proponent of public schools and the Abilene Philharmonic as she was a lover of education and the arts.

To say she was fun would be an understatement. She was vibrant and vivid and had creativity and vision. She made things happen no matter what the circumstances and helped everyone even when they didn’t know they needed it. Most recently her contributions to Cancer Services Network (a nonprofit her husband and she started) as well as Wylie Education Foundation were her focus.

She was sporadic and still methodical; she was off the cuff and pushed the envelope but could get a task done when no one else thought it was possible. Her ability to push the limits was unprecedented and her love for others, empathy and compassion knew no boundaries. She was the embodiment of what a mother, Nana, wife, friend, and pillar of a community is. She never backed down from a fight for what she believed in, but did it with tact and grace, always the lady.

Sherry was preceded in death by her parents Orville and Delores (Audis) Hicks of Ft Pierre SD, as well as Karen Hicks Alldredge DVM of Sweetwater, TX.

Sherry is survived by her husband Victor John Hirsch Jr MD of Abilene, TX. Her brothers Jim Hicks and his wife Deb of Fort Pierre SD, and Gary Hicks and his wife Deb of St. Johns, AZ. She leaves behind Victor “John” Hirsch III and his wife Kandis and daughter Samantha H. Goodman MD and her husband Kevin. She leaves behind 4 grandkids. Kiley, Victor John the IV, and Vance Hirsch as well as Easton Goodman. She built her world around them. She got her greatest love out of her work for the community and her family.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Hicks of St Johns, AZ, Jim Hicks of Fort Pierre, SD, Victor “John” Hirsch III and “Vic” John Hirsch the IV from Abilene, Tx. Kevin Goodman and Easton Goodman of Abilene, TX.
