Our beloved husband, Dad, and Paw Paw, passed away peacefully at his home in Lubbock on Saturday, April 4, 2026.
Rudy was born in Denton Valley, Texas on July 23, 1934, to Sally and Rich Johnston. He was one of eight children. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters and 5 brothers.
He married Betty Coughran on July 22, 1955, at Fair Park Methodist Church in Abilene, Texas. They were married 70 years.
Rudy was a member and deacon at Hwy 36 Church of Christ for many years. After retiring to Lubbock, Texas., they worshipped with Kings Ridge Church of Christ, as his health failed he and Betty worshipped at home with Dr. Charles Stanley.
Rudy loved his family, but his passion was being a master electrician, heating and air conditioning. He worked for Southwestern Public Service in Lubbock and Tahoka for 25 years before retiring and moving back to Abilene in 1982. He then was employed by Custom Wholesale Supply in Abilene where he happily spent the rest of his working years.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, one daughter, DeAnn of Lubbock, Texas, two sons Dennis of Dallas, Texas and Evan of Abilene, Texas, and several grandchildren.
While living in Tahoka, Texas, Rudy served on the Volunteer Fire Dept, coached Little League Baseball, worked with the Scouting program and was named "Citizen of the Year". He was an avid blood donor and was called many times for his rare A negative blood type.
Rudy was a very blessed and beloved husband, Dad, Paw Paw, many, many friends and mostly known as just Rudy!!
