Roger Dale Chittum

1950 — October 24, 2014

Roger Dale Chittum, 64, passed away Friday, October 24, 2014 in Abilene, Texas. He was born to the late G.J. Chittum and Sadie Whitehurst Chittum O’Bar on April 19, 1950. Roger attended Hawley Schools. He married Marilyn K. O’Kelley on March 29, 1968 in Abilene, Texas. They recently celebrated their 46th anniversary. Roger spent his entire life around cars and motorcycles. The early years were spent drag racing, the later years were spent at swap meets with his son and his brothers, and the years in between were spent as a loyal employee to Lawrence Hall for nearly thirty years. He was also an avid fisherman who especially loved spending time at the coast. Roger was always sociable and loved his friends and family. Most importantly, Roger was a supportive father, loving husband, caring brother, and adoring Poppa. He had the most wonderful smile for everyone. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Mary O’Bar and brother, Jerry O’Bar; sister-in-law, Carolyn O’Kelley Donaldson; mother-in-law, Marian O’Kelley; and father-in-law, Carroll Emerson O’Kelley, Sr. Roger is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn K. Chittum; their son, Kelly Chittum; 3 grandchildren, Jenna Chittum, Austin Chittum and Aaron Chittum and their mother, Machael Plank, as well as his beloved dog, Milly. He is also survived by his sister, Joyce and husband Don O’Bar; brothers, Leon Chittum, Maxey Chittum and wife Janet and Mark O’Bar and wife Nita; brother–in-law Carroll O’Kelley, Jr. and wife Susan, and brother-in-law Larry Donaldson along with numerous nephews, nieces, and a host of friends and co-workers. Funeral services were held be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Phil Christopher and Steve Alston officiating. Burial followed in Elmwood Memorial Park directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. The family would like to personally thank Dr. David Randall and his staff in Abilene and all of the doctors and nurses in Abilene and Dallas who helped care for him and a special thank you to Mitch Hall of Lawrence Hall Chevrolet in Anson, Texas for all of his help. Pallbearers were Mike Dodson, Pat Kelly, Corey Chittum, Casey Chittum, Marshall O’Bar and Jim West.
