Norma Anders Enzor

1937 — November 13, 2014

Norma was born August 3, 1937 in a garage apartment in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to John and Myra Anders. Myra, a saintly woman, was married to John, who was a Master Pipefitter at the Esso Refinery, then the largest oil refinery in the world. She was the second of five children: J.D., Norma, Sandra (now deceased), Ronald Wayne and Carla. She attended Istrouma High in Baton Rouge where she lettered and was All State eight times in three sports while also being President of the Honor Society. Influenced by Dr. Ira North, Norma attended David Lipscomb College where the first man she was introduced to was Ed Enzor. Married that following summer, she continued her education at Lipscomb College, Abilene Christian University and Louisiana State University. She supported her husband of 58 years, Edwin Harold Enzor, in every way. During the academic study years, she was the first travel agent for what became a five state corporation, Enzor Travel. She was a legal secretary in Rockville, Maryland and Executive Secretary for the Editor of the Louisiana State University Press. In between, she was full-time motivator and typist for Ed. When she arrived in Abilene in 1965 she became a Wildcat fan and MOTHER. She enjoyed ten years of work as a “boutique lady” at the Abilene Steinmart store. Ed and Norma are justly proud of their two children. Brett Thomas Enzor is Senior Partner with Ernst and Young, LLP in Dallas, Texas. Lara Leigh Enzor is President of Chaparral Scientific, Inc., her own pharmaceutical testing firm in Austin, Texas. Brett married Shelley Wolfe of Dallas and they produced three exceptional grandchildren: Alexandra (Alex), Andrew and William whom she loved far more than they could know. The life of a ACU family was sometimes difficult. Norma and Ed never agreed whether his first year’s salary was $6800 or $7200, but she knew how to “make-do.” She loved ACU and relished in her role of mother to dozens of students who would come to the home for advice, a shoulder to cry on and a meal when the Bean was closed. Once she fed the entire basketball team their Thanksgiving Dinner. Her pseudo children are around the world doing good in the Kingdom. Some of them are here today and all knew that they were always welcome at Mrs. Enzor’s house. She was a world traveler. She and Ed visited almost every continent, the Holy Land, sailed the high seas, rode camels, precarious cable cars and shivered in dark caverns. She was part of the first exploratory team searching for a location for ACU’s foreign study program. She eagerly joined a group of Christians to visit China and evaluate a Chinese version of our own Restoration Movement. As the Ecclesiastes writer said, Norma was a “worthy woman.” Her intelligence and common sense were legendary. She was also brave. She made the papers when at a critical basketball game the Athletic Director of Angelo State put the section for ACU fans far from the court. Norma picked up the signs and led ACU fans to an area where they could see and their cheers could be heard. There she re-established an ACU seating section. She knew that possession was nine-tenths of the law. As her disease began to intrude into her life, her faith never faltered. She maintained a sweet, loving spirit to nurses, doctors and fellow patients. Her relationship to the Lord seemed to grow as she developed her own prayer language which only the Lord could understand. But Ed knew it was a strong tie when one evening she prayed and at the end, in clear English she closed by saying, “Well, we’ll talk some more about that tomorrow. Bye.” She passed November 13, 2014. We will all have some “Goodbyes” in this life, but she trusted the everlasting Lord who will give to Norma a home in that everlasting home where we will never have to say “Goodbye” again. She is waiting for the grand reunion in the eternal tomorrow. The family requests that donations in Norma Enzor’s memory should be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, November 16, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, November 17, at University Church of Christ officiated by Dr. Royce Money and Bill Young. Interment will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home.
