Mitchel William Smith

December 22, 1963 — April 4, 2026

Mitchel William "Mitch" Smith, 62, of Abilene, Texas, passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2026.

Mitch was born and spent most of his life in Abilene, where he became known not just for what he did, but for the way he cared for others. He worked as a case worker with MHMR, dedicating his time to supporting the mental well-being of those in his community. He approached his work the same way he approached life, with compassion, patience, and a genuine desire to help people feel seen and supported.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James Weldon Smith and Patsy Jean Smith. He is survived by his brother, Mike Smith, and sister-in-law, Patty Smith, who was like a sister to him. He also leaves behind two nieces he loved as his own daughters, Jenni Williams and Kristen McGuffin, along with their husbands, Corey Williams and Luke McGuffin. Mitch was a proud and devoted great-uncle to Myka Williams, Kennedy Lewis, Alyx Williams, and Kylie Lewis, who adored him deeply.

Mitch was the kind of person who showed up. He was generous, selfless, and sincere, with a quiet humor that could catch you off guard and leave you laughing. He was often described as the first person to step in when someone needed help, never hesitating to give his time, his energy, or anything he had. His compassion for others was unmatched, and he lived his life as a reflection of his faith, truly being the hands and feet of Jesus to those around him.

He found joy in the simple, beautiful things in life. Mitch loved being outdoors, whether he was camping, collecting rocks, or spending time with his dogs. His greatest passion was gardening. He had a gift for growing things and took pride in creating spaces full of life and color. At his apartment community, he didn't just care for his own garden. He helped his neighbors tend to theirs, watering plants, pulling weeds, and sharing seeds, always wanting to create something that everyone could enjoy together.

He also loved his family deeply. Mitch rarely missed a family gathering and found so much happiness in giving thoughtful gifts, especially to his nieces and great-nieces. The girls held a special place in his heart, and he never missed a chance to celebrate them or share in their lives.

Those who knew Mitch will remember his kind eyes, his warm smile, and the way he made people feel cared for without needing recognition. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and quiet strength. The lives he touched are better because of him, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him.

A lighthearted memory his family cherishes captures his spirit well. While getting ready for work during a visit with family, Mitch unknowingly used his young nieces' roll-on bath marker as deodorant. When he casually mentioned borrowing "the girls' deodorant," the room quickly filled with laughter, especially when it was suggested he might end up with foamy underarms. It was a simple, funny moment that reflected his easygoing nature and the joy he brought to those around him.

Mitch will be remembered for the way he loved the way he gave, and the way he quietly made the world a better place.

A service to celebrate Mitch's life and the lasting impact he had on those who loved him will be held on Wednesday, April 8,2026 at 11:00 AM at Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd, Abilene, Texas 79606.
