Melvin "Smokey" Williams was born on September 9, 1953, in Castalia, North Carolina, to Roger and Annie Mae Williams. He lived in Abilene, Texas, for 30 years and graduated from Gold Sand High School. Melvin attended Broadview Baptist Church for 25 years.
He served as a Protective Equipment Specialist in the United States Air Force from 1971 to 1975, attached to the 63rd Air Wing at Norton Air Force Base in California, where he directly supported Air Mobility Command during the Vietnam era. Following his service, Melvin worked at Walmart Supercenter, where he retired in 2020 after 24 years. He was called home on March 2, 2026, at the age of 72.
Melvin was a very loving and charming person who was always willing to help anyone in need. His faith continually fueled the overflowing love he showed to his family, friends, and community.
Melvin leaves his mourning wife, Elaine Williams, with whom he shared 40 years of marriage; his son, Melvin Williams Jr., and his wife Jessica; his daughter, Jessika Garcia, and her husband Rafael; and three grandchildren Royce, Harlem, and Sinai.He is also survived by two brothers, John Williams and his wife Freda, and Mac Williams and his wife Tina; five sisters Lucy Williams, Polly Adu, Cornelia Bordeaux, Sherry Burton, and Lillie Hill and her husband Odell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents, Roger and Annie Mae Williams; two brothers, Henry and Herman Williams; and one sister, Brenda Crockett.
Melvin was a child of God, and he will be truly missed.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 from 5:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd., Abilene, TX 79606. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 11, 2026 at 11:00a.m. at Broadview Baptist Church, 2500 S. 27th St., Abilene, TX. Burial will be in Texas State Veterans Cemetery at 1:00p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
