Maxine Clarice Gaines

Maxine "Mickie" Gaines, of Abilene, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at the age of 78. Funeral services, with Rev. Derrell Patterson officiating, will be at 11:00 am Friday, July 18 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Burial will be at 3:00 pm on Friday at the Masonic Cemetery in Seymour, Texas. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Thursday at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. March 17, 1930, Mickie was born the daughter of Durant Smith and Clara (Martin) Smith in Carbon, Texas. She married Joe Gaines, Jr. on September 8, 1950 in Seymour, Texas. The couple moved from Wichita Falls to Abilene in 1982. Mickie was a longtime member of the Abilene Women's Club and of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Abilene. Mickie was preceded in death by her father, Durant Smith; her step-father, Grady Morton; one brother, Bobby Morton; three sisters, Joy Hendrix, Linda Morton Rugeley and Joyce Morton Smith. She is survived by her husband, Joe Gaines, Jr., her mother, Clara Morton, of Abilene; two daughters, Gail Matthews, of Abilene, and June Jackson and her husband Kenneth, of Spring, Texas; one brother, Richard "Buddy" Morton, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi; three sisters, Yvonne Sturm of Port Townsend, Washington, Carla Oshman of Sugarland, and Carolyn Morton of Houston; four grandchildren, James Matthews and his wife Kim, Ellen Dimon and her husband Mark, Joseph and Keith Jackson; and one great-grandson, Benjamin Dimon. Joseph Jackson, Keith Jackson, Joe Carl Metcalf, Myrle Metcalf, Bryan Grimsley and Brent Grimsley will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Bowdoin, Michael Oshman, James Matthews and Mark Dimon.
