Maureen McCormick

Maureen McCormick, 83, of Abilene, passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2022, in Abilene.

Memorial service will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 21, 2022, at Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest, 602 Meander St., Abilene. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.

Maureen was born in Swansea, Wales, UK, to Haydn and Mary Ann (Croaker) Hitchings on June 10, 1938. 

Maureen's move to the US started when she met her future husband Herschel while his US Navy ship was docked in Wales, UK. They met at a dance and kept in touch by writing letters. In one of those letters Herschel proposed to Maureen. Upon being discharged from the Navy, Herschel and Maureen married in 1957 and he brought Maureen from her seaport town to what she told he mother was the middle of nowhere, Abilene, which has been their home since 1958.

Maureen most recently worked for The Thrift House on Walnut St. for many years. She was a member of Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest. 

Maureen was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Clifford and Haydn, her husband Hershel on March 23, 2019, and by one daughter Lee Ann Garcia in 1995.

Maureen is survived by her daughter, Sherry McCormick; grandson, Adam Garcia and wife Nichole; two great grandsons, Oliver and Ryder all of Abilene; sister, Margaret Williams of Wales; three brothers, Phillip Hitchings, of Wales, David Hitchings of Wales, and Tom Hitchings of Liverpool, she is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and large extended family. 

Memorials may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.

Service will be streamed live on three platforms.
