Loyd Walker

1926 — June 9, 2022

Melbourn “Loyd” Walker was born on October 9, 1926 in Coleman, TX.  He left his home on the ranch in Lawn, TX peacefully to enter his eternal home with Jesus on June 9, 2022 at the age of 95.  Loyd was the son of Hubert and Rosa Walker.  He had three brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, June 13, 2022, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at Lawn Baptist Church, 518 Ave D, Lawn, Texas with Rev. Mark Moore officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene.

He graduated from Coleman High School in 1943, with dreams and aspirations to see the world he enlisted in the United States Army and served our country as a WWII veteran stationed in Manila, Philippines.  He served in the 738th Military Police Battalion and was discharged in 1946.  During this time he also served in the Naval Reserves for 4 years.  He completed his military career in 1954.  After being discharged Loyd wanted to go to college so he opened a bank account at Coleman County State Bank where he was able to obtain a GI Bill to be able to attend Hardin Simmons University.  He was still doing business at this bank until his final day.

Loyd met Alberta Beatrice Siler and on July 30, 1949 they were married and began 72 years of lifelong love together.  They had five children: Daughter-Linda Mitchell, and husband Mike of Tuscola, Son-Ricky Walker, and wife Diane of Lawn, Daughter-Cindy Young, and husband Joe of Midland, Daughter-Danette Walker of Midland and one Daughter who died at birth.  They continued to add joy to their family with 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.  Loyd and Alberta taught all of their kids the true meaning of how love, hard work, commitment and good values make a person successful.

Loyd had numerous jobs throughout his career from working at J. E. Stevens Funeral Home, General Motors Company, Conoco and owning his own business; Loyd Walker Exxon Station for 20 years in Abilene.  But his true love and dream was being a farmer and rancher.  Being raised on a farm, Loyd knew the meaning of hard work and commitment.  Raising cattle and producing a profitable crop may not have made him a rich man, but the joy and pleasure it brought him and the deep friendships he made along the way were priceless.  In his later years his son Rick became his right hand and best friend and they worked the ranch together daily.

He not only served his community through his business but also by holding many offices on multiple community boards such as Jim Ned School Board, Farm Bureau and View Caps Water Board.  The one he truly enjoyed for 21 years was serving as Director Vice President and President on the Taylor Electric Coop Board.  One of his biggest highlights was on May 21, 2014 when they honored him by naming the Walker Substation.  He was a member of Lawn Baptist Church and worked yearly on the “serving the community” day in Lawn, TX.

As you can see Loyd was a man that everyone respected, admired and looked up to.  His survivors not only included his wife and family but his coffee drinking crew and staff at Valley Grill in Tuscola and his many cows on his ranch.  But the greatest gift he leaves everyone he met was 95 years of being a Great Man in all of our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lawn Baptist Church, Lawn TX.
