Johnny Bartlett Teaff, 87, of Tye - a lifelong resident and farmer in Taylor County - passed away Tuesday, February 16, 2021, to be with his Lord and Heavenly Father. A family visitation will be Tuesday, February 23 from 5:00 to 7:00 at Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene, Texas. Funeral services will be 10:00 am on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at First Baptist Church of Merkel. Graveside services will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel. A family dinner will be held at Tye Baptist Church fellowship hall after the conclusion of the graveside service. Johnny was born to Archie V. and MayBelle Bigham Teaff on May 22, 1933, at their home. Johnny attended Crossroads School, a rural school on the Teaff family farm, until it's closing. He continued to Jr High and High School in Merkel while participating in track, basketball and football. His Senior year, Johnny qualified for the State track meet by tying with future NFL player Don Maynard in High Jump at regionals. Johnny was a graduate of Merkel High School in 1951. On July 14, 1951, Johnny married the love of his life, Jean Miller Teaff, at First Baptist Church of Merkel. At that time, he began his long career in farming and ranching. Johnny received the Taylor County Young Farmer of the Year award. He had a short stint in the oil field during the drought of the 50's but returned as soon as he could to his passion of farming and ranching for decades. In the late 90's, Johnny helped his son-in-law operate an oilfield wireline company. Johnny proudly served 12 years on the Merkel School Board. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Merkel Gin. Johnny was a long-time member and deacon of the Tye Baptist Church. He loved his church, his family and his friends. Johnny, or Pop as the grands called him, was an active supporter of everything his kids, grandkids and great grandkids participated in. Johnny lived his life as an example for his family and his impact extended to all in the community. Johnny is survived by his wife, Jean (Miller) Teaff, son Mike Teaff and wife Tammy of Richardson, TX; son Steve Teaff and wife Carrie of Frisco, TX; daughter Gayle (Teaff) Maxey and husband Keith of Tye, TX; grandchildren Bethany Doan and husband Kody of The Colony, TX; Marcee Hultsman and husband Stephen of Tempe, AZ; Misti Andress and husband Joseph of Tye, TX; Terah Atha McIntosch and husband Dustin of Murphy, TX; Ty Teaff and wife Taylor of Waco, TX; Zack Maxey and wife Kyndell of San Antonio, TX; great grandchildren Chandler Doan and Hudson Doan of The Colony, TX; Serena Hultsman and Flynn Hultsman of Tempe, AZ; Kylee Gaura, Jaxon Gaura and Jolee Andress of Tye, TX; Siyah McIntosh of Murphy, TX; Henry Teaff of Waco, TX; Easton Maxey, Emmitt Maxey and Everly Maxey of San Antonio, TX and many nieces, nephews and loving cousins. Johnny is preceded in death by his parents, Archie V. and MayBelle Bigham Teaff; brother Leroy Teaff and sister-in-law Nancy Teaff; brother- in-law Ralph Miller. Pallbearers are Johnny's sons and grandsons. Honorary pallbearers are his great grandsons. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tye Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Merkel or charity of choice.
