John Tillman

d. June 9, 2025

John Douglas Tillman, age 70, passed away from a long battle with numerous health issues, on Monday, June 9th, 2025, at Brightpointe at Lytle Lake nursing home. He was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, uncle, nephew and a great friend to many.

Doug, as he was known to family and friends, was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on August 13th, 1954, to parents Williams Charles Tillman and Dorothy Douglas Tillman. The family moved from Wichita Falls to Tyler to Abilene and finally Albany. Doug graduated from Albany High School in 1972 and was the valedictorian of his class. During his high school years, he competed in football and track for the Albany Llion's. His mile relay team competed in the state track meet at Memorial Stadium on the University of Texas campus. In addition to sports, Doug performed in many of the Albany Fandangle performances as well as the Christmas Nativity. Doug graduated with honors from the University of Texas with a degree in Psychology in 1976. He worked for Disability Resources in Austin for the state of Texas until his retirement.

Doug was a lifelong Longhorn and Texas Ranger fan. He loved baseball and competed with many little league teams. Doug loved music, history (especially the Civil War era), Mustang cars, beach vacations, travel, Peanuts cartoons, a great hamburger or barbecue, donuts, a goo scrabble match, and the numerous cats and dogs he owned and loved throughout his life. He was always supportive of his son, older sister, nieces and nephew and great nieces and nephews in their various activities including baseball, soccer, track and dance. Doug shared a kind heart, friendly nature and great sense of humor to everyone he met. He will certainly be missed but remembered by all who knew him.

Survivors include his son Kevin Tillman of the Metroplex, his uncle Winston Terrell Tillman of Frisco, his sister and brother-in-law Nancy and Richard Gore of Abilene, his niece Lisa Gore and her children Lily, Miles and Chloe Etter of Abilene, his nephew Eric Gore and wife Jessica and their children Hudson and Harrison Gore, his niece Laura Jasin and husband Paul and their children Lila and Holt. A very special friend to Doug was Paula Overman who he met in assisted living. They spent many happy times together.

We would like to thank the many nurses and care givers who took such good care of Doug during these last years at both Morada and Brightpointe at Lytle Lake. Dr. Samantha Goodman did an exceptional job of caring for Doug as she was always able to relate to him with a positive attitude and compassionate care. We would also like to thank the Alpha Omega Hospice Care for their assistance and attention to Doug. A special thank you to Ray Winkle for being such a caring roommate at Brightpointe nursing home.
