John LaVert Johnson, 90, of Abilene, Texas, passed away on August 4, 2023, in Abilene.
Committal service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at The Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene, 7457 West Lake Road, Abilene, Texas, with Pastors Jeff Hatcher and Billy Crim of Wylie Methodist officiating. Burial will follow. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
John was born in Weirgate, Texas, to Grover Cleveland and Bertha May Johnson on June 14, 1933. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, Texas, in 1950. He then attended North Texas State University in Denton, Texas, before graduating from Emory University School of Dentistry in Atlanta, Georgia. He married Enis Claire Adams on June 4, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He practiced dentistry in Abilene for over 40 years.
Doc was well-known for his big heart, quick wit, and exceptional abilities as a marksman, quail hunter, and card player.
John was preceded in death by his wife Claire and his son John Jr.
John is survived by his son Steven and his wife Vicky, and their children Reagan and Erin, his brother Doyle, and his granddaughter Jordan.
The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to Kris Dybzinski, Toni Rivers, and Cherie Shew, as well as the doctors, nurses, and staff at Hendricks and Encompass for their kind and loving care of John during his recent illness.
