John Henry Glenewinkel passed away on August 23, 2021 in Granbury Texas after a short illness.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. 

John was born on May 2, 1928 near Merkel Texas where his father owned and operated a small farm.  He was preceded in death by his parents Gustav & Martha Glenewinkel of Merkel, brother David Glenewinkel of Merkel, brother Gus Glenewinkel of Abilene, and sister Mary Ann Myers of Abilene.

John had a distinguished 34 year career with Amoco retiring in 1986 as a district superintendent.  He spent most of his retirement years among family and friends in Abilene Texas until recently relocating to Granbury.  He was a loyal member of Zion Lutheran Church in Abilene and dedicated much of his retirement to church service and as a meals on wheels volunteer.  John’s retirement hobbies included camping and fishing but he was also a skilled gunsmith and woodworker.   He never met a stranger and was a gracious friend to all who knew him. 

He is survived by his wife of 71 years Beatrice (Bea) Glenewinkel of Abilene, daughter Sheila McLean and husband Joe of Granbury, son Steve Glenewinkel of Abilene, granddaughter Whitney McLean of Weatherford, granddaughter Ashley Marshall and husband Justin of Weatherford, grandson Aaron McLean and wife Ashley of Granbury, great granddaughter Everleigh McLean of Granbury, along with multiple nieces and nephews. 

Visitation hours will be Friday, August 27, from 6 pm until 8 pm at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Funeral services will be Saturday, August 28, at 11:30 am at Zion Lutheran Church, 2801 Antilley Rd, Abilene Texas.  Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, Abilene.
