Joann Massey

1952 — September 23, 2022

Joann Massey passed away peacefully on September 23, 2022. She was born to Louise and Willard Crump on September 30, 1952 and is survived by the love of her life, Reagan Massey, to whom she was married for 44 years.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 am on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.  A committal service will follow at 11:00 am at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, at the funeral home.

Joann was a fierce woman. When her mother struggled with illness, she got a job at the age of 11 to help support her family. She cooked and cleaned and helped care for her siblings. Her iron will and refusal to give up made Joann a force to be reckoned with.

At 40 she left a successful career to get a degree and follow her passion for helping families and individuals in need. She graduated from the University of Texas with a Master’s in Social Work and committed the remainder of her working life to helping others.

Joann was always well put together and took pride in her beautiful home. She loved to shop and return things. She loved movies with happy endings. She loved to entertain, and she had a gift for socializing. She hated making decisions and she refused to be pushed. Above all else, she loved God. Her faith was lifelong and unshakeable. From His grace, she never faltered or strayed. Her light shone bright on this earth, and we are all lucky to have known the lady we all affectionately referred to as “the red-headed spitfire”.

Joann is predeceased by her mother and father, her sister Susie Chapin and her daughter Paula Williams. She is survived by her sister Dolly Musser, her children Rhonda Harris, Troy Hooper, Melanie Flash, Johnnie Massey, Wendy Miles and Joseph Massey and their spouses, Stacy Hooper, James Flash, Clint Miles and Polo Tercero as well as grandchildren Stacy Balderas, Marcia Harris-McCain, Dylan Harris, Spencer Williams, Chance Williams, Chloe Flash, Drew Spence and Rayna Miles.
