One of God’s faithful servants was called home on October 22, 2014. Hubert S. Hays died at Hendrick Hospice Care after a two-week hospital stay. Hubert was born on January 9, 1932 in Corpus Christi, Texas to Hubert S. Hays and Willie Mae Hooper Hays. His childhood years were spent in Abilene and Dallas, and he graduated from Abilene High School before earning his BBA from Texas Tech University. He married Gertrude Bryant on February 8, 1952 in Abilene. Hubert spent his entire professional career with Exxon and retired as a sales representative after forty years with the company. His retirement provided an opportunity for him to spend more time fishing, camping, serving others, and spending time with family, friends, and his dogs. Hubert served his country during the Korean War as a mechanic on the B-36. Church was always an important part of Hub’s life. He was a long-time member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, past-president of Primetimers and a volunteer for the church food bank for many years. Hubert was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert S. Hays and Willie Mae Hays. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gertrude Hays; son, William (Bill) Scott Hays of Ft. Worth, Texas; daughter, Susan Crook and husband Keigm of Albuquerque, New Mexico; sister, Marilyn Hitt of Abilene, Texas; grandson, Brian Curtis and wife Anne Marie and their children, Lucy, Henry, Moriah and Susanna of Ft. Worth, Texas; granddaughter, Kara Curtis of Albuquerque, New Mexico; nieces, Elizabeth Barber and husband Mike; Janet Murray and husband Clark, Mary Nell Harrington and husband Jack, and Nancy Haddox and husband Danny. Graveside service was held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, October 24 at Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, officiated by Rev. Jack Ridlehoover. A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 25 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene, officiated by Rev. Stan Allcorn and Dr. Jeff Reid.
