Howard Steakley, 75, of Abilene, Texas, went home to be with the Lord July 16, 2022. Howard passed away peacefully at home, with his family by his side.
Howard was born in the small town of Novice, Texas to Bill and Flora Steakley. He was the youngest of five children. He frequently shared many stories of his childhood surrounded by family, friends, and fellowship. After graduating from Novice High School, Howard went on to attend Tarleton State University and McMurry University, where he would graduate. He was also a proud member of the U.S. Army Reserves. He shared stories of his career as a manager of Thornton’s Department Store but will most likely be remembered as the proud owner of S&S Ironworks, for over 36 years.
Howard loved all things related to his family. He first met and married the love of his life, Paula Steakley, August 22, 1970. He was the proud father of two daughters, Andrea Steakley and Stacy Riley both of Abilene. A granddaughter Avery Steakley, and three grandsons Crew and Cam Riley and Ashton Warden. He was a fiercely devoted father, husband, and Papa who was known for his practical jokes, ornery disposition, and always showing up to every event right in the knick of time. He will always be the ultimate standard for what a husband, father and grandfather should be. He could literally fix anything and was always willing to show up to kill a rattlesnake, fix a flat tire, check the oil in your car, or drop off donuts at sunrise to the grandchildren. He was at every soccer game, baseball game, and never missed a family dinner. He was a constant presence in his family's lives and loved each and every one of them beyond measure.
Howard was preceded in death by the love of his life and wife, Paula Steakley. His parents, Bill and Flora Steakley and his sister Billie Jean Allen, and beloved canine companion, Blu.
Howard is survived by his daughters Andrea Steakley, Stacy Riley, and her husband Cade Riley; granddaughter Avery Steakley; grandsons Ashton Warden and Crew and Cam Riley; his sister Sue Gipson of Farmington, New Mexico, his brother Len Steakley and his wife Jane Steakley of Houston, Jeri Sterling, and numerous nephews and nieces.
