Helen Marie Lee Elkins, age 92 of Abilene, TX passed away on May 30, 2023, in Abilene. Visitation will be held from 5:00 -7:00 p.m., Friday, June 16 and funeral services will be held Saturday, June 17, 2023, at 10:30 a.m., both at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene, TX. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park. Following the graveside service, Helen’s family will host a gathering of family and friends at Miguel’s Mex-Tex Cafe, 3001 S. Danville, Abilene, TX.
Helen was born in Coahoma, TX to Winton B. And Lola Belle Hagood Lee on December 27, 1930. She married Mart Davis Elkins on March 27, 1948, at her parent’s home in Coleman, TX. Her professional career included administrative assistant at Crescent Heights Baptist Church, and supervisor at First State Bank. Helen held many volunteer positions throughout her lifetime and was most passionate about the Christian Women’s Job Corps, mentoring young women who were returning to the work force. Her faith was a strong guiding light and helped her navigate challenges. Helen was an accomplished cook and baker, and time in the kitchen with family was an important part of her life. She hosted many family holidays and gatherings at her home. Helen also loved game playing with family and friends, especially Scrabble. She loved to travel, had a witty sense of humor, and was a strong role model. Spending time with her grandchildren was one of her joys, and she supported them through the years in their endeavors.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Mart D. “Red” Elkins; and her parents, Winton and Lola Lee.
She is survived by children Bobby D. Elkins and wife D.J.; Vicki Elkins Hook and husband Eric; Debra Elkins Moran and husband Danny; Cynthia Elkins Barnett and husband Christopher; grandchildren, Jacob D. Moran; Sara E. Moran; Celia J. Wichert; Stephanie M.L. Elkins; A. Niklaus Hook and wife Katrina; Dane D. Hook; great grandchildren, Everett T. Hook and Taylor S. Hook.
