H. Lowell Johnson, 94, of Oplin, Texas, passed away peacefully at his ranch on July 28, 2026, surrounded by the land and community he loved throughout his life.

Born on November 7, 1931, in Oplin, Texas, to Herbert and Mallie Johnson, Lowell lived a life rooted in faith, hard work, and service to others. A graduate of Oplin High School, he remained deeply connected to the community where he was born and spent his entire life.

From an early age, Lowell developed an extraordinary work ethic. At just 12 years old, he plowed his first crop behind a team of mules, beginning a lifetime devoted to agriculture. He became a respected rancher and farmer, raising cattle, sheep, and goats and cultivating wheat and oats across the land he knew so well.

As a young man, Lowell's first experience operating heavy equipment came while helping construct Dyess Air Force Base. That experience would eventually lead him to another calling: public service. Motivated by a desire to improve and strengthen his community, Lowell was elected Callahan County Commissioner, a position he faithfully held for 28 years. Throughout his tenure, he earned numerous recognitions from the Texas Association of Counties for his dedication, leadership, and commitment to serving the people.

Lowell's service extended beyond public office. He was a passionate supporter of 4-H and FFA programs, believing strongly in investing in young people and the future of agriculture. He proudly helped organize the first livestock premium sale at the Callahan County Livestock Show, creating opportunities that would benefit generations of local youth.

A lifelong member of the Church of Christ, Lowell lived his faith through quiet acts of kindness, humility, and generosity. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, neighbor, and friend whose steady presence and gentle spirit touched countless lives.

One of life's greatest blessings came when he met Winona Winslett at a rodeo in Winters, Texas. They were married on September 12, 1959, in Mozelle, Texas, and shared a loving partnership built on faith, family, and hard work. Together, they spent many years harvesting and selling mistletoe, forming lasting friendships and creating treasured memories along the way.

Those who knew Lowell will remember his unwavering dedication to family, his love for the land, and his willingness to lend a helping hand whenever it was needed. His legacy lives on not only in the ranch and roads he helped build and maintain, but also in the lives he influenced through his service, example, and kindness.

Lowell was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Winona Johnson, and his great-grandson, Willard Hansen.
He is survived by his son, Chris Johnson and wife Beverly; his daughter, Tonya Eppright and husband David; and his cherished grandchildren, Shayna Hansen and husband Waylon, Cullen Eppright, and Sterling Johnson.

The family would like to thank the many friends, neighbors, and members of the community whose lives were enriched by Lowell's friendship, faith, and service. They are especially grateful to his caregivers, Kay Brakefield and Brenda Moreno, whose loving care, compassion, and dedication brought comfort and support to Lowell in his final years.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, at Hamil Family Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 31, in the chapel of Hamil Family Funeral Home, with Roy Meyer of the Lawn Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow at Oplin Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.

"Well done, good and faithful servant." Lowell's life was a testament to hard work, steadfast faith, and selfless service. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew and loved him.
