Fonda Lou Winter

After living a life full of joy and love, Fonda Lou Winter passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at the age of 79. Visitation will be Sunday, June 5, from 4-6 p.m. at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.  A celebration of her life will be in the chapel of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, Monday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m. with Steve Ridgell officiating.  Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Hwy 180, Anson, Texas.

Born Fonda Lou Moran to Frank and Mattie B. Moran on February 17, 1943 in Abilene, TX. To her mom, aunt, and sister, she was Fonda Lou, “Aunt” to her nieces, and “Tiger” to her Katie, Mattie and Philip.  She attended Wylie Schools where, in high school, a she was a member of FHA, played basketball, and was in the band, playing clarinet. She was also the first female to be named drum major and not drum majorette. During her time at Wylie, she made many lifelong friends that she has kept up with to this day.

In early 1962, She married Randon (Randy) Lenoy Winter and in December of that year, they welcomed their only child, Brandi. In the early part of their marriage, Fonda was a homemaker, but cared for her two nieces, Trina and Traci, while her sister, Hymonda, taught school. She was also a Tupperware distributor. During their marriage, they moved to Maljamar, NM, Plains, Tx and Midland, Tx before moving back and making their home in Abilene. While in Midland, Fonda took her first job outside of the home, working at the new Levi Strauss factory, where she was a line supervisor.

Once back in Abilene, Fonda worked for several different oil field offices, including Shannon Young Trucking, Dusty Rhodes and Darrell Rhodes, and Basic Energy. Before “truly” retiring, Fonda worked for Dillard’s. Even before retirement, she became her mother’s hair stylist and lottery ticker buyer (they never won). During the past ten years, she and Hymonda, would take the town for shopping and a snack at Sonic.  She was also a founding member of Southern Hills Church of Christ when the congregation moved from 12th & Chestnut.

Fonda didn’t just encourage her daughter to try things, but always stepped up to help lead. She helped coach her softball team, and was an adult leader for the Wylie 4-H club.

After an amicable divorce, Fonda and Randy continued celebrating with common dear friends and family.

In the late 80’s, Fonda met Tom Jordan. Fonda and Tom loved to travel. They would hook up the Air-Stream and go camping, with their favorite destinations being Possum Kingdom Lake, Albuquerque, NM and Pagosa Springs, CO were Fonda loved to soak in the hot springs. Over the course of their 30 plus years together, Fonda and Tom share many memories and he stood by her side throughout her illness.

She is preceded in death by parents, Frank and Mattie Moran, sister and brother-in-law Hymonda and William (Bill) Merkel.

She is survived by Tom Jordan, daughter Brandi Mixon and husband Frank, granddaughter Katie Holland and husband Phillip, great grandchildren Mattie Bryan and Philip (Sir Erich) Holland, nieces Trina Ostlien and husband Tony Yandell and Traci Yandell and husband Tim, and great niece and nephew Makaley and Kauy Ostlien.

Pallbearers will be Frank Mixon, Phillip Holland, Katie Holland, Mattie Bryan, Kauy Ostlien, Reese Grainger. Honorary pallbearer Philip Holland.
