Graveside services will be held at 10am Tuesday September 9th at Potosi Cemetery with John Fanning and Mike Harkrider officiating. Services under the direction of the Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
Bess was born in Josephine, Tx to Loyd and Gladys Long. She was raised in Wylie, along with her 5 beloved siblings. She often told stories of milking cows, fishing, hanging clothes on the line, and gathering wood for the cook stove, alongside her momma. Bess was a proud Wylie Bulldog and graduated from there as a cheerleader and Miss Wylie High School. Bess met her sweetheart Charlie Hobbs while at Wylie and went on to marry him in 1950 at the Wylie Baptist Church. Bess and Charlie were members there since 1959 where she taught 3 years olds and served in many ways over the years. Bess went to work as a teacher aide for her Alma mater, Wylie High School for more than 20 years. Bess and Charlie were honored to be inducted to the Wylie Hall of Honor in 2007. It was fitting as they supported countless youth activities in the Wylie community including 4-H. Her home and family was always her most important job. Bess lived life with a beautiful servant heart as she loved and led her family, neighbors, and friends. She was a constant encouragement and source of joy to everyone she met. Bess was a proud farmer’s wife. She and Charlie raised their 3 kids, 5 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren and many other family friends over the years. Bess always welcomed family and friends in for milkshakes and dominoes. Her home was always open and the banana bread was always waiting on the bar. She served countless meals from her home to the fields that her beloved Charlie was plowing. Bess loved the Lord and prayed thousands of hours of prayers for her family. She was the life of the party and was always ready for an adventure, a game or a dance break. She always had a song to sing and smile on her face.
Bess was preceded in death by her parents, 4 of her 5 siblings, her precious husband Charlie Hobbs and her baby boy David Hobbs.
Bess is survived by her favorite baby sister, Pat Kennedy of Washington State. Sisters by blood but precious friends by choice. Ronnie Hobbs, Barbara Brewer and husband Steve, and her daughter in law Monica Hobbs, wife of late son David.
Pallbearers will be her grands and great grands Cody Hobbs, Matt Brewer, Garrett Smith, Davy Hobbs, Kevin Smith, Asher Smith, and Bryce Tharp.
Memorials may be given to Wylie Baptist Church. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Holiday Hills Nursing Home in Coleman, Texas and the Coleman Hospice Care for the excellent care of Bess during her last days.
