Dwayne Hargesheimer

1938 — August 7, 2022

William Dwayne Hargesheimer, 83, passed away Sunday, August 7th, 2022, in Abilene, Texas with his wife and family by his side.

Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 11th, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home in Abilene.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m., August 12th, at Westgate Church of Christ in Abilene. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.

Dwayne was born August 12, 1938, in Quanah, Texas, to Gladys and Clifton Hargesheimer. He grew up on the family farm in Medicine Mound, TX helping raise livestock, plowing the fields, and working the garden.

Dwayne graduated from Quanah High School in 1956 and enrolled in Abilene Christian College on an athletic scholarship, excelling in baseball as a pitcher. In 1961, he graduated with a B.S. in Range Management and a minor in Chemistry. He joined the City of Abilene – Water Utilities Department in 1963 as a Chemist and was later appointed to Director of Water Utilities in 1976. During his career, he was instrumental in the construction of the Ivie Reservoir and the Water Treatment Facility in south Abilene which was named in his honor.  He retired in 2003 after 40 years of service to the City of Abilene. Colleagues looked to him as both a mentor and friend.

Dwayne married Louise (Franks) in 1961. They were each other’s lifelong companion and friend and recently celebrated 61 years of marriage. They were blessed with two children: Debra and Mike.

Dwayne was an avid gardener, outdoorsman, and an active member of Westgate Church of Christ, serving as an elder and deacon. He loved all things Abilene, whether supporting local high school sports, being active in Rotary Club, or befriending local business owners. He was a good neighbor. He looked for ways to serve others without any recognition. He lived a life devoted to his family by caring for Louise, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Dwayne was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Richard.

Dwayne is survived by his wife Louise, his children Debra (Bobby) Lemons and Mike (Carolyn) Hargesheimer; his grandchildren Brandon (Jessica) Hargesheimer, Caleb (Sarah) Hargesheimer, Hayley (Cody) Herrick, Layton (Rylee) Hargesheimer, Kyle Lemons and Kregg (Sara) Lemons; his great-grandchildren Beckett, Blaire, Brooklynn, Emily, Beau, Michael, Sage, Walker, Gretchen, Merritt, Clara, Benjamin, and Shepherd.

Dwayne will be remembered for his servant heart and his fiery spirit that served to strengthen everyone he met.

Memorials may be given to Meals on Wheels or the West Texas Rehabilitation Center.
