On the morning of Saturday, May 17, 2025, in Abilene, Texas, James "Douglas" Simmons, age 86, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family.
Doug was born in Roby, Texas, to Tom and Cleo (Sullivan) Simmons. He graduated from Roby High School and went on to build a life defined by hard work, kindness, and devotion to family.
Doug married Dorothy (Polk) Simmons, and together they had two children, Angela and Falon. Later in life, he found love again and married Geraldine (Rogers) Simmons, with whom he shared ten joyful years.
After high school, Doug began his career in the oilfield as a roughneck, later becoming a rock mill operator. In 1961, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served on active duty in Germany until 1963. He received an honorable discharge in 1967.
Doug joined Texas Farm Bureau Insurance in 1966 as a part-time agent and transitioned to full-time in 1968. Over the next 32+ years, he built a successful and respected career, earning numerous awards and accolades. Doug was known for his dedication, innovative thinking, and genuine care for those he served.
In retirement, Doug enjoyed working on his farm in Abilene, always eager to help a neighbor or friend. He loved traveling the world, going on cruises, singing karaoke, and playing guitar. His heart was fullest when surrounded by family and friends at the farm, especially while hunting and fishing with his kids and grandkids. A devoted Dallas Cowboys fan, Doug also appreciated a cold Miller Lite while playing darts.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Cleo Simmons; sisters, Charlene "Sister," Cleo "Baby," and Sally; and brothers, Tom and Bill.
He is survived by, wife Geri Simmons; children Ange Glover and husband Keith of Abilene; Falon Simmons and wife Jenny of McKinney; Grandchildren Skylar Lee and fiancée Monica Hintz; Ashlyn Rich and husband Colton; Alexis Simmons and fiancé Chase Hakes; Falon Lane Simmons; Brandon and Brady. Great grandchildren; Taegyn, Slayden and Griffin.
