Obituary

Dewayne Edward Chitwood, 89, of Abilene, passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2026.

Dad was born August 8, 1936 in Paris, TX. He attended North Dallas High School before attending one year at Abilene Christian College. He then transferred to SMU where he graduated in 1959.

It was at SMU where he met our mom, Virginia. Mom died in 2019 and is the one person he loved beyond all others. Dad’s life can be defined by the fact he loved her exactly the way every husband should love his wife. During Mom’s sickness, he never left her side, faithful to his commitment to love and protect her til “Death Do Us Part”. Today, Dad and Mom are strolling over Heaven together. Dad was a humble, faithful servant of our Lord. Those that knew him bear witness to the fact he lived with the complete knowledge he has been called to stand before the throne of God.

Mom and Dad moved to Abilene in 1966. It is there where they raised their three children; Susan Hancock of Abilene, Cathy Lauve (Peter) of Abilene, and Bill Chitwood (Carol) of Brentwood, TN. Between the three of us, there are eight grandchildren; Max Lauve (fiancé Stephanie White), Virginia Webb (Mark), Kate Hancock (David), Conley Chitwood (Brandi), John Lauve (fiancé Madi Goodwin), Davis Hancock, Dabney Brock (Hunter), and Austin Chitwood (Sabrina); and ten great-grandchildren with one on the way. He is also survived by his sister, Phyllis Savell of Florida.

Dad had many hobbies. If he wasn’t on the golf course, you might find him playing dominoes with his friends at the Abilene Country Club, or on the lake catching stripers.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you donate to one of his favorite charities; Ben Richey Boys Ranch, West Texas Rehab, Christian Service Center, or Meals on Wheels.

With love, Susan, Cathy and Bill.
