She planned on learning to fly so she could join the Women's Airforce Service Pilots (Wasps). Bernice flew with and was instructed by Red Bohannon. After forgoing the lessons due to financial reasons, she married artist Salvadore DeRegel and they moved to San Francisco. After his death she returned to Abilene and became a frequent commercial flyer traveling with her late brother, Henry Hart. Bernice lived amongst assorted paintings, sculptures and other pieces of art that filled her home built by her late brother, Henry.
