Barry Dale Smoot, 66, of Abilene, TX, left this earth on September 22, 2024.
Barry was born in Childress, TX, on May 1, 1958. He came to Abilene to attend ACU, where he studied theatre and music, which became his life's vocation. Over the years, Barry was involved with numerous productions for Abilene's first Young Audiences troupe, the McMurry Summer Theatre, Abilene Community Theatre, The Mill Dinner Theatre, and, most notably, The Historic Paramount. Barry served as the Artistic Director at the Paramount for over 30 years. His creative vision was exceptional and he touched countless lives - actors and audiences - through sharing his talents as director, choreographer, set and lighting designer, and actor. Barry was also a talented writer of several plays, one of which, "Revelations," was recently named a Finalist Play in the Del Shores Foundation Writers Search. In addition to his stage work, Barry created the 24fps Short Film Festival, which was already scheduled to celebrate its 25th and final year in November. Over its history, 24fps grew from a local event to a well-respected and internationally-recognized festival.
Barry was a deeply private man with a sharp sense of humor and a caring heart. He fiercely loved his dogs and gave them a pampered existence. He will be deeply missed. A memorial and celebration of his life will be scheduled and announced in the coming weeks.
