Angelika Jutta Cantrell, “Angie” to her friends and “Oma” to her grandkids, passed away peacefully after watching the sunrise for the last time on June 21st after a long battle with cancer in Abilene, Texas.
Angie was born in Esslingen am Necker, Germany, in 1953. She was the daughter of Friedrich and Anna Luise Bartosch. She finished her apprenticeship and worked for Mercedes Benz and had travel opportunities in Thailand and beyond.
Angie met the love of her life, Danny Cantrell, in 1975 while he was stationed in Germany. They met through family and friends and by their second meeting knew that it was destined to be. They were married in February of 1976 and began their life of adventure together. It wasn’t easy being married to someone in the Army, but Angie made it seem effortless. Between deployments, moves, children, and a language barrier, Angie was able to create a home no matter where they were as well as a career. Angie and Danny had three children together, Russell, Danny, and Christina.
After her retirement, she became active in the Abilene Quilters Guild. She had a passion for making quilts for everyone she loved and anyone that needed one. Quilts of Valor, an organization that provides quilts to service members, was one of her main projects. She was proud to present veterans with quilts to honor their service. She also loved working around the house and the yard with her husband. Watching the sunrise and drinking coffee with her husband was one of the ways she found joy in the small things.
Angie loved being an Oma to her grandchildren. She treasured her time with them.
Ethan, Evan, Trenten, Brice, Julie, Madilynn, Reagan, Camber, and Harper were her treasures. She was a “Great” Oma to Berkley which brought her so much joy. One of Angie’s love languages was feeding someone. She was always making everyone’s favorite foods and making sure they were satisfied before she would eat herself. Whether that was cookies, cakes, schnitzel, or chicken fried steak, nothing was ever too much. If you didn’t have seconds, she would ask why you didn’t like her cooking. No one left her table hungry.
Angie is survived by her husband, Danny Cantrell, two sons Russell and Danny, and one daughter Christina. She has nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
